Children and parents arrive at 9:00 AM and work together to “sign in” and answer the special “Question of the Day.” Goodbyes are said in the family area and children join the group for the first morning circle meeting.

During circle meetings, several different types of lessons are given to the entire group. Most often, a lead teacher “presents” a new activity or set of materials, offers a “grace and courtesy” lesson, reads a storybook, sings songs, facilitates “share and tell,” or talks about a special world holiday. Other large group lessons include units on geography, animals, plants, and physical sciences. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, music and movement is offered during second circle. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, yoga is offered during second circle.

Independent work time is the cornerstone of the day. Children in the multi-age classrooms explore materials that interest them and that are developmentally appropriate. Small group and one-on-one lessons are facilitated by the teachers during this time block, allowing each child to learn at his or her own pace. The work period is a careful balance between child-led activities and teacher-directed individual lessons.

A healthy snack is offered at 10:30 AM. Children may serve themselves when hungry.

MCHW has a large enclosed outdoor area with a play structure, swings, gardens, a sand table, a water table, and outdoor easels. During inclement weather, children remain inside for special art projects and games.
